| Remarks & Notes |
| A little N&W and “Pokey” history is shown here. Two GP9s on a yard crew are switching some cabooses at the busy yard at Bluefield, WV in 1977. The lead unit—877—was constructed brand new for the N&W in 1959. The trailing unit—2811—came from EMD that same year for the Nickel Plate (as number 811). It was renumbered 2811 after the 1964 merger. In the case of the 877, she helped retire the last N&W steam (which ran until April 1960). The NKP’s famed fleet of Berkshires were already cold when the 811 arrived, however, having steamed their last miles a few months earlier. The Cat D-9 in the foreground was part of the Bluefield wrecker outfit. The white underscore line under the 2811’s road number means it cannot be used in pusher service. |
