| Remarks & Notes |
| Southern F3A 4172 (rebuilt in the '50s to F7 specs) was one fourth of an A-B-B-A set of black (not green) and off-white ("imitation aluminum") freight units that ushered in dieselization to the Appalachia Division in 1947. Twenty two years later--long after steam was vanquished--the veteran tonnage hauler, which division crews nicknamed "Big Sid," waits for its next assignment at Andover. By the fall of that year, regular freight service F-units would be gone from regular assignments here (although they remained in service elsewhere on the Southern until 1974). |
