Alicia, PA 7/11/12 - Cumberland Mine Railroad's SD-38-2 CMYX 22 has 38 loaded coal hoppers in tow as it enters the unloading shed at Alicia Harbor, on the east end of the railroad's 18 mile line between mine and port. The coal will be air-dumped, where high pressure air from the trainline opens a series of hopper doors on the bottom of the cars, dumping over 100 tons of coal into the bin below in a matter of seconds. The dumped coal is conveyed to a large storage silo along the nearby Monogahela River, where it will be shipped by barge to the Mississippi River, southern ports in the United States, and overseas destinations in China and India. The 4 hour turn between mine and port is run 24 hours a day, averaging up to 6 turns per day.
