Remarks & Notes
Soaring high above the Snake River, Union Pacific's 150th Anniversary Passenger Special rolls over the impressive Joso Viaduct at a cautious 10 MPH. The Joso Viaduct built in 1912 is 3920 feet long and 240 feet above the high water mark of the Snake River and replaced a rather circuitous route between Hinkle and Spokane through the Palouse region of southeastern Washington. Even though this three unit, eight car train is respectable in size for today's standard of passenger trains, it seems dwarfed in scale by the immensity of the bridge. The last regularly scheduled passenger train to operate on this line was the diminutive and aptly named "City of Hinkle," and would be so impressed to witness the scene above.
