Remarks & Notes
In the April 1974 issue of TRAINS Magazine, J. David Ingles and David P. Morgan co-authored a pictorial remembrance of the railroads that had been lost to merger by that date (with many more to come in the next decade). It was titled “Fallen Flags,” and the feature continued through the next two issues. The inspiration came from Ingles’ favorite railroad—the Wabash. The familiar “Follow the Flag” herald of the Wabash thus became the symbol for all “Fallen Flags”—the many private railroad companies that once brought so much color and diversity of the American railroading industry. The Wabash itself was absorbed (into the N&W) in 1964. Appropriately, the “Wabash” unit in Norfolk Southern’s stunning 20-unit “heritage” fleet is captured at the instant its nose passes between two units (left, “PC” 1073, and right, “NYC” 1066) at the Spencer, NC roundhouse on July 3rd. Despite the sweltering heat and crush of humanity (and dearth of good photo opportunities), the event was a solid success. It was thus appropriate for the herald that launched the term “Fallen Flag” be captured as the commemorative unit that displayed it was spun on the Spencer turntable for the adoring multitudes. Thank you, NS!
