Remarks & Notes
Everyone on RP seems to enjoy the ghoulish shots of derailments, so here's an April Fool's Day view of one from 1972. The photographer is the late Joe Morton, a Cincinnati Division engineer on L&N's "Short Line," between Louisville and Cincinnati. This scene was shot from the lead unit of train 276 as it passed through a derailment site just north of Glencoe, KY (at MP 79). The carnage includes many examples of freight cars from that time. You can see Pennsy, Reading, P&LE, B&M, C&O, EL, and of course L&N box cars. A B&O "Tofcee" trailer is in the shot, plus at least two loaded tri-level auto racks. The temporary track was obviously laid as panels, since the rail joints are not staggered. You can bet Joe is bringing his train across this track at restricted speed, if not lower.
