It's not like I could let this thing pass practically through my backyard and not go take a photo of it, right?
NS 1066, NS 1065, and NS 8102 (NYC, S&A, and PRR respectively) leading 11R past the refurbished 1910 train station that once served the estate of the 4th US President James Madison, and later on horse racing mogul William duPont Jr.
The Montpelier Estate is now a National Historic Landmark.
It is said that the during the duPont ownership, that the Southern Railway attempted to terminate service to the station and effectively eliminate the station agent's position. The owner of the estate at the time, Marion duPont Scott, opted to pay the agent's wages until he retired some years later.
Passenger service at Montpelier Station was considered a "Flagstop" and therefore trains were not scheduled to arrive or depart, rather they stopped only if there were passengers waiting to board or de-train at the station. |
