A misty atmosphere has descended into the undulating kudzu-filled landscape of upstate South Carolina. On this sultry summer night, perched on a rock with my camera and tripod, I know a 2-hour-late, northbound Amtrak Crescent has consumed all but a small segment of the distance between us. From far off, a train horn echos across the terrain. First one crossing, then a second..."Clear, Courtenay, One, Amtrak 20, Out."...a third, and ultimately a fourth. It's 12:13 AM. The horn's atmospheric disturbance has grown significantly. Then a ray of light appears, growing. The source bursts around the edge of the cut, approaching rapidly. "Clear, Keowee, One, Amtrak 20, Out." With a whoooosh, the train rushes past. Flying under the signal bridge of CP Keowee, the signal aspect falls to red. The marker lights make a quick impression on the scene, before fading into the distance and around the curve in the ribbon of rails ahead. The K5LA sounds for two more crossings. "Clear, Clemson, Amtrak 20, Out." Three minutes later, two short horn blasts emanate through the night air. The train is departing Clemson for Greenville, Charlotte, Washington, and New York, leaving the NS Greenville District quite close to how she found it, less a multitude of clear signals.
