| Remarks & Notes |
| Cabooses had almost completely disappeared on through freights by 1987, but on this snowy day at the “Strawberry Patch” a couple of miles west (or railroad “north”) of Big Stone Gap, VA, an ex-L&N bay window cab brings up the rear of a Kentucky-bound empty hopper train. Even so, an EOT is tacked on the rear coupler for good measure. The reflective round paddle on the rear harkens to train order/time table rules. Red denoted a train holding the main track, while the conductor or flagman would rotate it to yellow if the train was clear of the main in a siding. |
