Tate's Cut. One of the most distinctive features of the old Connecticut Valley Line is the deep rock cut, located immediately north of the freight depot in the town of Deep River. This cut is named for the Tate Family, which owned the large, white house (visible through the trees) that is perched high on the bluff above. For many years, this cut has been popular with railroad enthusiasts, because the eastern side (right side of the photo) is part of a small park owned by the town, and is thus very accessible to the public. In this scene, a southbound New Haven J-1 class Mikado emerges from Tate's Cut, hauling a heavy passenger train into the Deep River Yard.
