| The Connecticut Valley Line. New Haven 3025 rounds the curve at Broadway with a short freight bound for Old Saybrook. One of the most scenic spots on the Connecticut Valley Line, the Broadway section affords not only a great view of the mighty Connecticut River, but also a view of two major landmarks in the town of East Haddam. In the distance, the "swing bridge" marks the crossing of Connecticut Route 82 and just east of it, the white structure is the historic Goodspeed Opera House. Just south of the opera house and just out of view to the right is the small Goodspeed Airport (42B). Although steam once plied this line regularly when it was a branch on the New Haven system, it is rare mileage for steam today. The present-day Valley Railroad's tourist excursions do not venture this far north. The line is still used by the railroad's diesel-powered Essex Clipper Dinner Trains, and the occasional charter, such as this Lerro Productions event in 2012. |
