| True heritage: thirteen years after Conrail was split between NS and CSX, the number of engines remaining in Conrail blue has dwindled to the point that only about a dozen are remaining in mid-2012. Many of these will likely be gone by the end of 2012, as rebuild programs and repainting will finish the rest of them. One of the remaining CR blue engines, SD50 #5425, cools its heels in the Allentown car shop after working a yard job on the west end of the yard, where it has been assigned for much of the past few months. NS inherited 78 such SD50s from Conrail, and although many were retired a few years after the split, a number of them have continued to escape retirement and repainting. With NS continuing to rebuild its SD50s into SD40Es, it may only be a matter of time before 5425 too becomes painted black. |
