| Remarks & Notes |
| Consecutively-numbered Southern SD35s 3031 and 3032 roll into the house track at Duffield, VA to meet an eastbound coal train (behind the photographer) on the authority of a Form 31 wait order. The fellow on the ground beside the locomotive is Trainmaster Bradford (who got the switch for them), and the guy riding the pilot is conductor Howard Lawson. These two units were part of eight being tested—like Noah’s Ark, two at a time—for rail stress and clearance through Natural Tunnel. The other six units—two new GE U30Cs, two SD24s, and two SD45s—are in the clear near the tunnel at the short siding at Glenita. The Southern test department had outfitted the 17-degree reverse curve through the tunnel with stress gauges. As a result of these tests, rail anchoring through the tunnel was considerably beefed up. Some 44 years later, the results of these tests continue to pay huge dividends. |
