Remarks & Notes
This is an image I obtained from a retired L&N/CSX management friend of mine, David Orr (thanks, Dave!). The occasion is a special photo shoot for the L&N and U.S. Steel. The normally grubby Alcos had been scrubbed down at Corbin the day before for this assignment. At the time (1965), the L&N ran double-daily unit trains from the USS mine at Lynch, KY to a coal washer (prep plant) at Corbin. From there, this met coal was dispatched nightly on the "Steel Train" to Gary, IN. I was on hand to photograph this special run myself, but everything I shot was in black and white. This rather interesting time exposure with the dwarf signal in the foreground was done by an unknown contract photographer at the north end of the yard at Loyall. Notice the head brakeman is giving a "back up" signal with his lantern--still SOP in these early days of "walkie-talkie" radios. Sadly, rear unit 1407 would suffer an early demise in a horrific head-on collision north of Knoxville, TN just four years later.
