Remarks & Notes
Main Line of Mid-America Part of the original double track mainline from Jackson to Ponchatoula, Mississippi on the Illinois Central mainline to New Orleans, this rail is famous not only for the trains it once supported such as the City of New Orleans, but also for where it came from. This 112 lb beauty was born in September 1934 from the one of the fiery open hearth furnaces at Inland Steel’s Indiana Harbor works in East Chicago, Indiana, and signifies one of the most profitable products that were ever produced at this Indian steel mill giant; rail of course. While today the mill no longer rolls rails, it still contributes to the national economy by producing steel under the ownership of ArcelorMittal.
