| White Pass Work Train. You've likely seen photos of the all-steam, White Pass Rotary Fleet at work clearing the line, but you likely haven't seen all of the logistical support that train needs to do its job. During each day of the snow removal operation, there are two or more diesel-powered work trains on the hill, carrying supplies and equipment that are necessary to keep the operation on schedule. One such train typically heads up the hill early in the morning, bringing tank cars with water and bunker oil for the steam engines. Other trains then bring up heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, to break up the heavy snow pack. This particular train was hauled by 90 Class Locomotives 100 and 96. She was transporting a large backhoe-type excavator used for digging out switches, as well as a tank car of diesel fuel to support other machines already in action at White Pass. On the rear platform, her conductor seemed to be enjoying the rare and impressive sight of the Rotary Fleet being serviced immediately behind me. |
