| Cimarron Valley's tri-weekly Dodge City Turn rolls west over uneven track at Montezuma, KS while en route back to Satanta. Can you picture crack Santa Fe streamliners such as the Super Chief slamming through here at 90 MPH? Well, it almost happened.
For a time, ATSF management eyed this route as a cutoff bypassing the longer mileage and severe grades of Raton Pass and pushed the line towards a projected mainline connection at Colmor, NM. Tracks were extended as far as Farley, NM, before the project was halted and the plan quietly scuttled. The railroad was eventually cut back to Boise City, OK, where CVR still runs to this day. Standing at Montezuma watching the CVR rock and roll past the former Santa Fe station sign made my mind drift into a daydream, wondering about the possibilities of what might have been... |
