| Clinchfield track and mechanical department crew members (as well as a private contractor's bulldozer) deal with the enormous task of removing three F-units, 47 loaded coal hoppers, and over 3600 tons of coal from a cut at Wininger, Virginia. This was certainly the worst derailment in the Clinchfield's history, at least in terms of damage loss. The main line was closed for more than three days. CRR 1402 was purchased during World War II to deal with new 4-6-6-4s weighing more than 300 tons. Invariably, these huge machines would sometimes end up in places other than on the rails, so the 1402 was the only means of retrieving them. |
