| Remarks & Notes |
| Northbound L&N Cumberland Valley Division manifest number 66 rolls out of the north end of 6,244-foot Hagans Tunnel, on the seldom-photographed Kentucky side. The tunnel--L&N's longest--was completed in 1930 as a key link in the "CC&O Connection" that brought Harlan County, KY traffic into Virginia, and around the now-famous Hagans Switchback on the Virginia side. CSX still rolls eight to 10 trains a day through Hagans--but, alas, the days of manifest freights are long gone, except for occasional detours. Three GE U25Cs are up front on today's edition of train 66--one of four daily manifests on the route in 1966. |
