Reminders of what was..... A visit to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum is like walking through a time warp. Everywhere along the line there are undisturbed artifacts, some subtle and some not-so-subtle, that vault you back to a bygone era. From 1905 to 1983, this railroad served the booming mining industry in Eastern Nevada. When the mining industry died, the railroad quickly followed. In more heavily developed sections of the country, an unneeded railroad such as this one would likely have been dismantled and removed in short order. Out here in the remote desert however, nearly 4 hours drive from the nearest big city, the owners were pretty much able to walk away, simply donating the infrastructure to what became the White Pine County Historical Railroad Foundation. Fortunately for railroad historians, this group has worked to preserve as much as possible of this once proud operation. Although you can no longer send a telegram up the line to Keystone, you can still take a train up there, on the original route, and behind the original iron horses that hauled the copper trains of the early 20th century.
