| Remarks & Notes |
| This is the beginning of the end of the 1968-1979 steam excursion program on the Clinchfield. Flamboyant CRR GM Tom Moore--wanting a bigger steamer to pull his passenger train, rather than diminutive Ten-Wheeler Number 1 and two Pullman green F7B units--has leased ex-C&O Kanawha 2716 from its owner, the Kentucky Railway Museum. Pulled to Erwin by CRR F-units, the engine is now being stripped down for rebuild. However--Moore would soon be brought down in a scandal of misappropriated money and fraud in a major management shake-up. The big Kanawha would go south to Marion, NC for a time, and then on to Southern Railway. Bill Purdie and crew would resteam the engine as "Southern 2716," but her career would be very short because of firebox problems (and the impending restoration of N&W 611). The 2716 had a later brief reprieve under steam, but for several years now is back "home" at New Haven, KY at KRM---where she's again rusting away before Tom Moore first had her pulled to Erwin. Such a fine engine deserved a better fate. See photo 307487 for view of how she looked in actual service on the Southern in 1982. |
