| West of Roanoke, most manifest and empty coal trains ran via the old N&W, like this freight is doing on a gray January morning. The roughly parallel ex-Virginian on the opposite bank of the New River - out of sight to the right in this photo - carried most of the eastbound loaded coal trains. |
