| Remarks & Notes |
| Four big SD's lead an eastbound SP manifest off the Great Salt Lake fill at Saline, returned to terra firma after a dozen miles "at sea." Visible in the distance are the hills and microwave tower above the Southern Pacific maintence camp at Lakeside, west end of the lake crossing. The caboose has just passed under an elevated pipeline carrying super-salty salt water from the northern arm of the lake, parallel to the railroad across the promontory peninsula, where it will be deposited in large evaporation ponds and harvested by Great Salt Lake Minerals. It's the early summer of 1986, and SP is fighting a battle with rising lake levels, constantly running work trains during weekdays in an attempt to raise the lake level. By within weeks, a huge windstorm would wash away several miles of fill, closing the railroad for several months. |
