| Remarks & Notes |
| Three big EMD's roll the Eugene-Rio Grande (Roper, SLC) manifest slowly eastward across the "Bagley Fill," the rock causeway bisecting Bear River Bay, passing the westbound approach signal to Promontory Point siding. Normally, yard limits at Ogden would only be a half-hour or so away, but we're in the high-water days of the late 1980s on Southern Pacific's line across the Great Salt Lake. In the previous few years, rising lake levels have imperiled the SP mainline. This stretch of railroad has been reduced from double-track current-of-traffic ABS to dark single track DTC; The former double-track segment at Promontory Point remains as a long passing siding, protected by dispatcher controlled interlocking at either end. Not only the SD45T-2 is classic SP--so is that signal head, a tri-color RACO arrangement found perhaps only on the Espee. |
