Remarks & Notes
Here is 5ft. 3" gauge 'renewed' S class 4-4-0 named 'Galteemore' (an Irish mountain) pictured by an unknown photographer at Belfast's Adelaide depot. She is in in the handsome GNR(I) blue livery, officially described as Azure Blue with Signal Red under framing. The class were designed to haul express passenger trains from Belfast to Dublin. The renewed locomotives emerged from Dundalk Works in May 1938. The five original 1913-built engines were provided with new, heavier frames, new 200lb/psi boilers and new 19" x 26" cylinders. No.173 was paired with a 3,500 gallon tender. The weight was 53 tons 6 cwt. One class 'S' has been preserved by the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland. The locomotive seen behind No.173 is a 'V' class 4-4-0 No.87 'Kestrel'.
