One year before the end!
This is the "Gare de la Bastille" station near the Bastille square (named after the royal prison destroyed during the 1789 Revolution). The station served the "Vincennes" suburban line Paris - Sucy-en-Brie - Boissy-Saint-Léger - Brie-Comte-Robert - Verneuil-l'Étang. All trains were commuter trains, and all were steam-hauled until the end. On Dec 14 1969 both the line and the station were abandonned and the station was later destroyed to give room to the new "Bastille Opera". On the day the station closed, a modern and efficient regional express line (RER) opened which used parts of the old Vincennes line. It was electrified and served the center of Paris by way of brand new wide-clearance underground tunnels. Today, the A line of the RER network is one of the busiest lines in the world with more than 1.2 million passengers per day. |
