Remarks & Notes
After a clearance improvement project to bypass some tunnels and enlarge others was completed in early 1964, the L&N began operating trains 44 (north) and 45 between Atlanta and Cincinnati, via Corbin, KY to handle "TOTE" (piggyback) and tri-level auto traffic. Much double track was also reduced with CTC replacing ABS (as shown here, where the former "KY" n.b. DT through the Corbin passenger station was lifted). Although ATC (Automatic Train Control) between Etowah, TN and Corbin was still operational in the early 1964, the L&N had petitioned the ICC to discontinue it. A month before it was, ATC-equipped FA-2 363 leads train 44's power at Corbin, with two EMD GP30s behind. The 363 had some nose damage in a derailment earlier, as evidenced by the gloss black partial repaint on the right (engineer's) side of the nose only. The next month, matched sets of GP30s/35s or U25Bs would be handling these trains.
