Remarks & Notes |
I love the smell of coal smoke in the morning. With the brilliant September sunlight streaming through the trees on the east side of the yard, DRGW 487 approaches the Chama Water Tank for her morning drink. This morning is especially steamy in Chama and the standing water beneath the east-side spout is a dead give-away that 487 isn't the first loco to step up to the pipe today. The 488 was here about 15 minutes earlier and is already coupled to her train as the road engine for today's run to Antonito. With a 9-car consist behind her, the 488 will need some help on the 4% to Cumbres and the 487 is indeed being readied to provide that help. Scenes such as this one are part of the magic of the Chama Yard. Noplace else in the US can one still witness the kinds of operations you'll see here. With all of the chatter lately regarding the transition to a new operator for the Cumbres & Toltec, the historians and enthusiasts among us can only hope that the sort of access we currently have to this little time-warp will somehow be preserved. |
