On a crisp, glorious autumn morning, Saratoga & North Creek Railway's train No. 186, the New York Express, rumbles across the roaring, rushing, mist-laden Sacandaga River with a mostly-empty train bound for Saratoga.
This image represents the fulfillment of a long-held dream: To witness a train crossing this bridge. When I was a kid, my family would spend a week in the Lake Luzerne area every summer; I would always see this bridge standing forlornly above the Sacandaga's white water and hope against all reasonable hope -- for the tracks were clearly out of service -- that one day a horn would herald the approach of a train, and we would rush down to the river so I could watch it pass. Obviously that never happened, and the dream faded away as I left home for college and moved even further west to begin a career... only to be reawakened years later by the fortuitous timing of the S&NC's new operations on the ex-D&H Adirondack Branch and a cousin's early-October wedding. Amazingly, everything worked out perfectly, and this is the satisfying result.
