| Remarks & Notes |
| Deep in "the Bunker" at Union Pacific's Harriman Dispatch Center in Omaha, Nebraska, dispatchers control the movement of hundreds of trains on the UP's 36,000-mile system. Seen here are dispatchers handling rail traffic in Colorado - note the closed-circuit TV images of Moffet Tunnel on the large screens above the dispatchers. Other informaiton is displayed on these screens as well, including real-time weather. Each dispatcher monitors train movements and lines switches using the multiple computer screens in front of them, and they are also in contact with each train via radio. For more images from the HDC, click here, here and here. Photograph taken on railroad property with permission, and no flash was used. |
