Remarks & Notes
The Reading Lives! These unique "Coal Tubes," once operated by the Glove City Coal Co., still stand near the roadbed of the former Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Railroad. The FJ&G, an independent shortline not connected to the Reading system, hauled coal from a New York Central connection and dumped it into a bin under the tracks. A steep conveyor-type device carried the coal up through the notch visible between the two bins on the left side of the frame. The railroad and the coal company are long gone. But even in 2009, twenty-five years after the railroad shut down, the famous "Reading Anthracite" logo can still be seen. Reading Anthracite was once part of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, which controlled the Reading Railroad. Ironically, Reading Anthracite still exists. Though controlled by different owners, the company is still using the logo that's fading from the side of these structures. Digital photo.
