In the Andes, the rail is now safer than the road
When the Central Andino was operated by ENAFER, a state-run and state-owned company, there were many accidents and fatalities on the railroad. It was considered as an undesirable but unavoidable side effect on the sharp grades of “the most difficult railroad in the world”.
Now that the operator is the privately owned FCCA, it is efficiently managed by Mr. Juan de Dios Olaechea and his dedicated team. Accidents and wrecks have (almost) entirely disappeared from the tracks. However, on the road it is another story. The traffic has dramatically increased on the congested and dangerous “Carretera Central” highway, where the rate of accidents is high.
The picture shows another, less dangerous highway, linking La Oroya with Junin on the “altiplano” behind the Andes range. An overloaded truck has just fallen in a ditch and the police protects the site while the freight bound for Cerro de Pasco moves safely on rails.
