I seldom take photographs of 'modern' traction, but this westbound Class 66 with a train of scrap metal was too good to ignore. Captured in lovely evening light, she is probably heading for the smelting furnaces of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. The photograph is taken the site of the now abandoned Goose Hill Junction where the Midland Railway's crack north and southbound expresses once roared by. The route is now barely visible in the unchecked line side trees, but it diverged to the right of the Class 66, behind the railings and signal entering a long, deep cutting now waterlogged. Visible on the left and just about to disappear in the undergrowth are the rusting rails of the former Locke's Sidings that used to serve a local colliery. Quite why these disused rails (which now serve nothing at all) have never been lifted remains a mystery.
