Albert Hammond's song "It Never Rains In Southern California" is a bunch of garbage. A Low pressure system positioned itself over Nevada for a few days of the trip, allowing for clouds and a few scattered showers. None the less, allowed for a really nice back drop in the photo with a very low setting sun. Works for me.
For the train and storm chaser. Thunderstorms, dark clouds, rain, lightning, hurricanes - tropical storms, funnel clouds, storm light, and rainbows. Hopefully a source of information, including EXIF Data, and inspiration for your future photo excursions.
