The 78xxx class locos were a mixed traffic type,designed by R.A.Riddles and built at Darlington Works from 1952 onwards.In this November 1965 view,78004 (one of the 65 built),has just been withdrawn from service and is stored on the scrap line at Gloucester Horton Road depot.After a short working life of only 12 years,the loco will soon be dispatched to the South Wales scrapyards,where she will be cut up in February 1966.There appears to be some damage to one of the cylinders,and this was possibly a factor in the loco being withdrawn.
