Remarks & Notes
The former LMS lines in the Calder Valley did not see 'Pacific' power until York MPD rostered the few remaining ex-LNER A1s to bring freight to Healey Mills Yard for onward transit. One of the last A1s to survive (and the last time I ever saw one in steam) was No.60121 'Silurian'. She was named after the racehorse owned by Lord Derby that won the 1923 Doncaster Cup. Here she is, about to depart for York and facing east towards Wakefield under Storrs Hill road bridge. The large factory with its distinctive tower seen in the distance, was the main manufacturing centre for 'Slazenger' cricket and tennis sports equipment. The shell of this building still survives in other use, more than can be said for Silurian herself, sent for scrap in October 1965.
