My final trip to the C&NW 40th Street Shops was just before May 22, 1956, the last day for C&NW steam in Chicago. The only operational steam locomotives I saw on this visit were several 0-6-0s and an E2 class pacific being serviced. There were many retired locomotives to be seen throughout the terminal area. Clearly, the end was near. Here is C&NW ES class 4-6-2 620 in the deadline. This locomotive, along with sister 617 behind her, were rebuilt and streamlined for the Minnesota "400". They spent their last years on the Wisconsin Division heading local passenger trains.
