A single engine leads an empty coal train over the massive MacAurthur Bridge. The bridge was opened in 1912, and rail traffic was added in 1928. Before being replaced by the Poplar Street bridge, seen towards the bottom of this photo, the highway into St. Louis was supported on the top deck of the MacArthur. In the late 1980's, the TRRA acquired the structure from the city of St. Louis in a trade for the Eads Bridge. The MacArthur now hosts much of the traffic traveling over the Mississippi to and from the Gateway City.
