Remarks & Notes
History Happened Here. This photographer's favorite Alco RS-3 hauls revenue freight past the old Delaware & Hudson depot in Cambridge on a cold Upstate New York winter day. Check out the icicles on the beige building to the right of the locomotive! The slate roof that adorns the Cambridge depot is typical of Washington County, N.Y.; slate was mined in the hills around Granville to the north and was once an important commodity for the D&H. Also in Cambridge was the Rice Seed Company, which shipped outbound seed on the D&H to farmers across the nation. Rice operated a huge business — it was reputed to be the first or second largest seed dealer in the world — and brought a lot of money to this little village. No wonder the depot was so ornate for a country branch line! Across the street from the depot sits the Cambridge Hotel, where Pie a la Mode was invented and first served in the 1890s. Click here for a companion photo of #605 smashing through a snowbank earlier this same day. Scanned from Fujichrome Velvia 50. Shot with Canon L-series 24-70mm f2.8 lens.
