| The LMS 'Black 5' 4-6-0s are widely (and rightly) acknowledged to be a classic British mixed traffic design. They are regarded by photographers as a mixed blessing probably because no less than eighteen of the class are preserved, or possibly because their no-nonsense black livery is rather uninspiring. Nonetheless many fine images of these wonderful machines grace the Railpictures files. One of the later (1945) examples No.44871 gets away purposefully from Rawtenstall. Enthusiastic volunteers have thoughtfully cleared the lineside of the unsightly brambles that had grown here in recent times. |
