The Great Salt Lake Causeway
No, this is not the Lucin cut-off and we are not in Utah. But this is a also a long and straight fill right over a dry salted lake with 13km / 8 miles of tangent track. It is located quite high in the mountains, almost 3300m or 11000 ft. This is how the Antofagasta to Bolivia railroad crosses the Carcote dry salted lake, i.e. the Salar de Carcote, in Chile, not fare from the border with Bolivia at Ollague. The landscape is “unusual” and the site is beautiful, surrounded by volcanoes. A dark one with an obvious volcano shape can be seen on the right on the other side of the salar. The Google Earth view is self-explanatory (click below). Instead of Ogden and Lucin, the stations are called Ollague and Carcote. The picture shows a scheduled afternoon train carrying ore concentrates (silver, lead, zinc) from the Bolivian mine of San Cristobal to the Pacific port of Mejillones, north of Antofagasta, for export. It weighs about 3000 metric tons and it truly deserves its 3 engines. The picture is shot from the edge of the salar, at the Carcote station.
