On its last day in service SP 9 heads south to Keeler from Owenyo on the Southern Pacific's narrow gauge Owens Valley line. SP 9 was handling the chores while SP 1, a GE 70-tonner was at Bakersfield for overhaul. The narrow gauge lasted for another eight months before abandonment in April 1960. Despite its technical deficiencies I like this old image because it seems to emphasize the lonely nature of this line that basically ran from nowhere to nowhere in the middle of nowhere. Far in the distance is 14,404 foot high Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous 48 states.
