Remarks & Notes
Running the High Line. The Durango & Silverton's Locomotive 486 eases Train 462 around the famous horseshoe curve known as The High Line. Built in 1881, this most spectacular stretch of the old D&RG Silverton Branch reportedly cost as much as $1000 per foot to construct, in an era when $1000 was a significant sum of money. The rock shelf on which the train runs towers nearly 400 feet above the Animas River and at some points is so narrow that railroad passengers literally cannot see anything below the train but the steep canyon wall. This stretch of track demands the ultimate level of respect as a derailment here would be catastrophic. Accordingly, the D&S has a permanent slow-order in effect on the High Line and the track is inspected by maintenance crews several times per day.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
