A hard trek
We are above Tamboraque, a bit after the Aruri switchback. Between Tamboraque (3007m 9864ft asl) and San Mateo (3216m 10551ft), the track climbs 209 meters (686ft) in 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles). That is an average grade of 3.43%. The maximum grade is 4.37%. And one must add the braking effect of the sharp curves. The track plan is quite contorted as you can see by clicking here. On this track, the annual tonnage in 2009 was 1.8 million tons. This railroad achieves a striking performance every day. And the objective of current capacity improvement plans is to bring the tonnage to 12 million by 2017.
