Cab ride on Sierra Number 3. Railtown Engineer George Sapp and Fireman Warren Smith carefully coordinate the departure of Sierra Number 3 and her special Passenger Extra from the site of a photo run-by for excursion patrons. The cab of the "Three-Spot" is quite spacious for a relatively small engine. The boiler backhead is at the very front of the cab, providing a reasonably cool environment and facilitating good visual contact and communication between crewmembers. Being an oil burner, the Fireman can operate his controls and watch the track almost continuously. The crew reports that Number Three is a very smooth runner and demanding of an extra measure of care and respect for that very reason. The locomotive was on her side at least twice back in the early 1900s and it's not difficult to imagine some of her early Engineers getting just a little carried away by her performance. My thanks to George and the crew at Railtown 1897 for their kind hospitality in allowing me to experience the ultimate ride behind this legendary locomotive.
