The track inspector and his dog
“The Ferrocarril Central Andino is the most difficult railroad in the world” says his Chairman, Juan De Dios Olaechea. With towering mountains all around, rock falls are just one of many dangers. It would take too long to describe all of them here. For example, during my visit in September, a thief had just been arrested because he had stolen angle bars, spikes and tie plates and intended to earn a few coins of money with that iron. All these dangers make careful inspections part of the daily life of the “Central”. Everyone keeps a watchful eye on the line: engineers and any other train agents, track gangs, supervisors, and of course the track inspectors. Their work is little known but their role is of tremendous importance.
