Scandalous and delightful
A 1936-built Sentinel railcar ensures the international passenger service between the Peruvian city of Tacna and the Chilean port of Arica. This standard gauge line is 63 km long (39 miles). The railcar had a Volvo truck engine installed in the early 2000's. It does two return trips per day (Monday-Saturday).
It can legitimately be considered scandalous that the passenger rolling stock is so old. And indeed, the Tacna Regional Government - who is the owner and operator of the Tacna-Arica railroad - should be ashamed of letting the line in such a derelict state. However for railfans, this is a pure delight. The Tacna station is a museum, and the railcar is like a living dinosaur.
