By the time the River Wharfe has reached Ulleskelf in the Vale of York, it is flowing at a slow and lazy crawl, barely disturbing the placid meadows. I was surprised that only my dog Jess and I were there in the warm morning sun to see the passage of this morning's 'Scarborough Spa Express'. She contented herself with swimming, whilst my precarious perch on the sandy and crumbling riverbank threatened to cascade me at any moment into the water below! The church tower of St John the Baptist, up river at Kirkby Wharfe can just be discerned through the bridge.
