Spectacular Andes
We are on the high plateau behind the Andes mountain range that you can see beyond the lakes. The landscapes - adorned with wild life - are beautiful as long as one stays away from the mining areas. The photographer is looking westward: the Pacific Ocean is not very far away after the mountains. The picture was shot in December during the Southern Hemisphere summer. The weather is typical of the Andes summer that the locals consider a mountain winter. Due to the Humboldt current, humidity and rain accumulate over the mountains while the weather is hot and sunny on the coast. And, yes, there is also a train, with an American GE Dash-8. This engine is dedicated to the Cerro de Pasco line because its axle load is too heavy for the bridges of the Lima-Oroya line.
This picture was made possible thanks to my friend Markus Fischer. Not only did he organise the trip but this picture was shot from our car while he was driving.
