| A loaded CN coal train passes an empty CP grain train in the narrow confines of Black Canyon. At this location, the Thompson River twists through an oxbow so tight that the only routing option available to the Canadian Northern Railway, CN's predecessor, was to bore the 1366-foot curved Black Canyon Tunnel through the cliff and then immediately jump across the river. CN 2285 West is strung out through that creative engineering solution while CP 9655 East sweeps through CP's own Black Canyon Tunnel on the Thompson Sub; the wood structure above the fifth car on the CN train is a remnant of the temporary trestle CP used to curl around the point prior to completing its tunnel.
